Time
Immemorial
In recognition
of the standing which the Ancient Society of York Florists is held
throughout the horticultural world, a
plaque has been erected above the entrance to the electrical and
gardening sections of BARNITTS' STORE in Colliergate, York.
This doorway
was originally the entrance to the sign of the sandhill (licenced
premises) where the very first meeting of the reformed society was
held, followed by its first public show.
Why the Society
is the only survivor of all those who were instrumental in forming
the horticultural world of today is unanswerable. The plaque will
however ensure that no matter what changes take place, the name of
The Ancient Society of York Florists will live on in TIME
IMMEMORIAL.
On
Wednesday 30 June 2010, the bronze plaque was unveiled by former
society secretary Arthur Robinson. In attendance were president
Penelope Dawson-Brown and other members of the committee along with
York Civic Trust director Peter Brown.
